MARTYN STEINER
Environmental Systems and Societies teacher
I’m Martyn Steiner, an Oxford-based teacher. I teach IB Environmental Systems and Societies (ESS) and MYP Science at Halcyon London International School.
This is my teaching portfolio: a few classroom projects, my qualifications and the roles I’ve held in schools and education.
Environmental Systems and Societies
ESS brings together ecology, environmental science and the ways people interact with the world around them. My teaching includes investigations of local ecosystems, work with scientists and projects that connect environmental questions to students’ surroundings.
From my classroom
- Life at the Zoo: a collaboration with London Zoo educators and scientists, including Partula snail conservation, penguin behaviour and hedgehog monitoring.
- The London mews project: students worked as citizen scientists to gather data on a very local ecosystem. They co-planned methods and spent several weeks working through scientific method and analysis questions.
- Green Seasoning: a whole-school sustainability role encouraging colleagues to embed an enriching sprinkling of sustainability learning across the curriculum.
Teaching and leadership in Oxford
My Oxford experience includes Assistant Principal at Greene’s College Oxford, Head of Biology and Senior Tutor at Oxford Sixth Form College, and Head of Senior School at Oxford Montessori Schools. I have also completed a STEM secondment with the Department for Education.
I live in Oxford. If you’re looking for an ESS teacher locally, or would like to discuss a school role, research or resource development, get in touch.
